(DES MOINES, IA) – (OCT. 25, 2018)— Move over Halloween! There’s another celebration this fall, and it helps local kids! To honor National Chiropractic Health Month, Des Moines chiropractic physician Dr. Chris LoRang from Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center invites patients, community members, and their families to trade in Halloween candy for the treat of helping local kids.

Dr. LoRang will donate $5 to Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) for every pound of wrapped, store-bought candy surrendered, up to $300. This festive Halloween Candy Buy Back is open to all. Candy will be accepted during clinic hours beginning 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 until Noon on Friday, Nov. 2 at Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center at 601 E. Locust St., Ste. 102 in Des Moines’ East Village.

All candy will be weighed in an official weigh-in event at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at the clinic. An antique scale on loan from Reclaimed will be used to weigh the candy.

“This is our inaugural candy buy back event and we hope to bring community members together for a great cause,” said Dr. LoRang. “We are entering a time of year where candy and sweet treats inundate our homes and offices. We wanted to seize this opportunity to make Halloween about more than just sugar, especially when there are kids in our community who are in need of support. In addition, this gives us a chance to educate our patients about the negative health effects of sugar on the body. We’re hoping to create a win-win opportunity for kids across Des Moines.”

Dr. LoRang is hopeful that his clinic’s candy buy back event will give patients and community members another option for all the candy after trick-or-treating. And, most importantly, to raise awareness about the needs of kids right here in our community while having some Halloween fun.

It’s important to remember that kids and adults can skip the sugar and still have Halloween fun. Instead celebrating with sweet treats, Dr. LoRang recommends these sugar-free treat alternatives for parties and trick-or-treating:

  • Glow Stick Bracelets and Necklaces
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Halloween Tattoos
  • Halloween Stickers
  • Play-Doh
  • Packages of Trail Mix or Nuts
  • Mini Bubbles
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Vampire Teeth

No-sugar-added Halloween-themed recipes such as Ghostly Bananas for Halloween, Whole30 Devilish Deviled Eggs, “Candy Corn” Veggie Platter, Jack-o-Lantern Clementines, Sea Monster Sweet Pepper dip and others, are offered on Capital Chiropractic’s website at https://capitalchirodsm.com/blog/recipes/.
